After updating this page to include the Dog and Partridge, I thought it might be better to rationalise and quantify my rating system.

Let's start with Landpersons and Bar Staffs demeanour :

10 Pleasant, knows my name, (seems) willing to talk to me.
9 Pleasant, knows my name, will talk to me.
8 May or may not know my name, will talk if spoken to (and there's nothing more interesting to do).
7 Will say 'hello' without prompting
6 Will say 'hello' in reply.
5 Miserable bastard

The beer scale is more tricky so I'll just give a few pointers. This table indicates what the pub's beer is equivalent to :

10 Excellent e.g. Creamy Tetley's bitter or Theakston's XB on top form
9 ..6 Drinkable beers.
5 John Smith's Bitter
4 .. 1 Beers in various degrees of sourness
0 Any Lager

On this scale, good Stones (hand pulled) would be 8 to 9. Wards bitter (hand pulled) 4 to 5.

General Comments

A pleasant pub, located close to Sheffield University's Faculty of Engineering. A convenient meeting place. Lively lunchtime and early evening trade. No Riff Raff. Function room available.
Recently (Dec 2001) taken over by Simon and the gorgeous Sam. They have made a few minor changes, but the look and feel of the pub is generally unchanged (except you get a smile when you arrive (unless Gabby's on) and nobody has been banned recently)

General Comments

A pleasant pub with a 'lived in' atmosphere. I rate the bitter the best in Sheffield. That, coupled with the excellent lunchtime menu ( the prices are very reasonable as well ) make Fagan's my current favourite lunchtime venue.

The Dog and Partridge

General Comments

Another Irish pub, although this is a REAL Irish pub, with Guinness, Irish music in the background and a John Kennedy room (I always thought he was American). A proper pub with a lively lunchtime trade. Slightly less 'lived in' than Fagan's.

Another recently refurbished pub (are the breweries made of money ?). It used to be known as the Bee Hive. The room is like a barn, presumably to get in as many Friday and Saturday night revellers as possible.

General Comments

A brand new pub, positioned next to Bars1. A young persons pub, very popular with the students (who can get discount by showing their union card I believe). Lots of games and video screens. A bit to noisy for my taste, but each to their own..
