Killamarsh is situated in the North East corner of the county of Derbyshire, on the border with South Yorkshire. It is about 10 miles South East of Sheffield and a similar distance North East of Chesterfield.

Killamarsh was mentioned in the Doomsday Book as Chinewoldmaresc, which is believed to originate from Chinewold's marsh - Chinewold being the lord of the manor. It was a scattered agricultural community, but coal has been mined here for 500 years.
With the building of the Chesterfield Canal between 1771 and 1777, and the coming of the railways, Killamarsh became an important trading centre. From the 19th century, coal mining was the most important industry.
Sadly, the coal mines have now closed, and the railway no longer runs through Killamarsh. The scattered communities of Netherthorpe, Churchtown, Upperthorpe and Westhorpe have been joined together by housing estates, and the village has grown into the size of a small town. Although there are still foundries and a few other small industries in the area, Killamarsh has become home for many commuters from Sheffield and Chesterfield.
Here are some old photographs of Killamarsh
