Wireless Success

Keywords :Acer TravelMate 4501LMi wifi 802.11b 802.11g Dlink DWL-520 "poor performance"

I have eventually got my Acer TravelMate 4501LMi laptop working satisfactorily with my house's wireless network. For the best part of a year getting it to work has been a difficult and long-winded process. It hasinvolved moving the machine from room to room and rotating it to try to get a better signal. In fact the gizmo on the toolbar reported a good signal strength but it took an age to connect to the wireless router, a Netgear DG834G. Neither of the 2 desktop PCs (with Dlink DWL-520 cards) nor my mini MAC with Airport, also on the network, had any problems.
I tried updating the machine's Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network connection but was told there was no newer on available. I desperation I changed the device's Wireless mode from '802.11b and 802.11g' to '802.11b only' and now it works a treat.
Select
Start > Control Panel > System > Hardware >Device Manager
then
Network Adapters > Intel(R) PRO/Wireless 2200BG Network Connection
select the 'Advanced' tab, 'Wireless mode' and then '802.11b only'

As I say, it now works a treat. I get fast and reliable connections and in fact I get faster transfer rates than ever before (480 kb/sec on a 512kb ADSL line).

I am posting this in the hope that it will help some other poor devil in my situation.

Tories win English election

Well not in actuality, but if you look at the figures below, (figures obtained from the BBC News, Election 2005 web site),you will see that the Conservative polled more votes than Labour, but were awarded significantly fewer seats.
See more details here.

The Conservatives received 8,102,662 votes while Labour received 8,038,965 , yet the Conservatives were awarded only 193 seats to Labour's 286.
That isn't fair !

Or to put it another way, the Conservative polled more votes than Labour, but ended up with two thirds of the seats.
That isn't fair !

How could this gross miscarriage of justice occur?

I know the system isn't linear (i.e. the number of seat you get is not in direct proportion to the votes you receive), but over such a large population, as that of England, surely things should even out.

If you get the same number of votes, you should get the same number of seats.

Look at the North East, Labour polled just 2.7 times as may votes as the Tories, but get 28 times as many seats.

Look at the North West, Labour polled 1.6 times as may votes as the Tories, but get 6.8 times as many seats..

Look at the East Midland, Labour polled just about the same votes as the Tories, but get 1.4 times as many seats..

That isn't fair !

It can only be by underhandedness. And who is in a position to oversee such a gross miscarriage of natural justice ?
The incumbent administration is. Enough said ?

Look forward to another 5 years of ..
Taxation, Taxation, Taxation
and
Soft on bureaucracy, soft on the causes of bureaucracy.

Maybe by the next election, Mr. Blair will have created enough civil servants to achieve a real majority (not that he need to).

What use are busses ?

And another thing ..
What use are busses? They keep stopping to let people on and off. This is guaranteed to hold up traffic. If they must run, they should run to the destination stated on the front without stopping.

Beer Prices Rise 5.6%

Beer Prices in my local pub have risen by 5.6%. A pint of Tetleys bitter has gone up from £1.80 to £1.90, that's a whopping 10p. (When I were a lad, a pint cost 1s 10d in old money, that's 9p now)
Mr Blair tells us that inflation is only 1.3%. (Consumer Price Index in Feb 2004) What planet does he live on?

Where has this increase gone ?
The Chancellor has put 1p on a pint and when you add VAT to that (a tax on a tax!!!) that will go to 1.175p. This will, of course, be rounded up to 2p.
The remaining 8p will go to the publican, pubco and brewery.

Bear in mind that the brewing trade tells us that the reason beer is so much more expensive than on the continent is because of high taxes. Therefore the proportion of a pint that covers the cost of the beer is quite low. For the want of any factual figures lets say it's 50%. So the brewing trade has added 8p to their cost of 90p, that's a ginormous 8.9%.

Pubcos (century inns etc) and brewerys are just getting greedier and greedier. They are going to kill the goose that lays the golden egg. We'll all end up motoring to bloody France to get our cheap 'beer' there.

Have a nice day.

Bus fares rise above inflation.

I got the bus into work on Friday. The cost of a "Day Saver" had gone up from £2.70 to £2.90. That's a 7.5% increase!!!
Mr Blair tells us that inflation is only 1.3%. (Consumer Price Index in Feb 2004)
He also tells us he's pumping vast amounts of taxpayers' money (my money, your money) into public transport. If so, why has the service got even worse.
e.g.
Busses every 1 hour 15 minutes to Killamarsh instead of every 1 hour in the evening.
Busses no longer "Express" i.e. They pickup within the city limits.
Bus station toilets close at 10pm with no relief now that the dangerous superloo has been removed but not replaced.

Don't tell me that "First" is a private company and is not the responsibility of the government/council. It exists on large amounts of public subsidy. He who pays the piper should call the tune!!!!
